[I found this gem of an analogy on comp.sys.mac.apps -- Craig]

A fairer analogy would cast proprietary mainframe operating systems in
the role of the dinosaurs, Unix in the role of the bright, curious
little mammals, and personal computers squarely in the insect kingdom.
They evolve quickly, breed like flies, and would take over the world
if only they could get organized.
