A contender for the Flying Cross:

I just heard, from Greg Canote, that he was fliying to Switzerland on a
British Airways Airbus a few years back and, when the plane was nearing its
destination, the pilot made the announcement:

   "We have decided that the runway at this airport may not be long
    enough to accomodate our plane.  We are diverting our flight to
    Geneva in order to avoid embarrassment."


[I wonder whether they did that routinely each day on that particular flight.]
