[Many Fun_People pointed out that the posting "TW800 Conspiracy" lacked some
credibility in that it didn't give full names of informants and many just
made blanket statements (unlike the extremely detailed conspiracy theory
materials we usually see). But here's the real clincher, from Aerospace

NEWS DIGEST September 17, 1996

1. WASHINGTON POST - Investigators yesterday provided their most definitive
and forceful dismissal of theories that TWA Flight 800 was downed two months
ago by "friendly fire" from the U.S. military, and that the federal
government is covering up the incident. Since the Boeing 747 crashed into
the Atlantic Ocean off Long Island on July 17, rumors have abounded,
particularly on the Internet, that the jetliner was blown from the sky by
an errant missile fired by a Navy vessel or fighter plane, or by an Air
National Guard plane conducting maneuvers in the area. "Friendly fire is
highly, highly, highly unlikely. I would probably add a few more 'highlys'
to that," James Kallstrom, the FBI agent leading the criminal probe into
the crash, said at a news briefing.
