According to a recent article in US News & World Report, deciding who
would participate in the presidential debates was a snap compared to
deciding on what night the debates would be held. Apparently, network
chiefs were more-than-concerned that the debates would interfere with big,
money-making programs. NBC didn't want the debates on Thursday because
of its killer lineup, including such shows as "Friends," "Seinfeld," and
"ER." CBS didn't want them on Sunday because debate viewers would most
likely be the same ones who watch "60 Minutes." ABC didn't want them on
Wednesday because of the success of its lineup, including "Ellen," "The
Drew Carey Show," and "Townies." Too bad for ABC! Wednesday prevailed-
largely due to the fact that it didn't interfere with any baseball playoff
games. The debates will be held October 2 and 9. (SF Chronicle)
