World War II saw the development of the first portable radio-telephones.
The first of these, of a size suitable to mule transport, was called a
"walky-talky".  Later, the hand-held version, familiar from many movies,
was called a "handy-talky".  Popular usage applied the term "walky-talky"
to the "handy-talky".  Early movie-camera setups were called
"creepy-peepies", but that didn't take either.
